IP adresses saved for 6 months at the 1. January 2008

Post by Admin » 26 Dec 2007, 22:23

Mr. Horst Köhler signed the law that force internet sites to save IP addresses for 6 months (to be checked by the police).
TrashMail is hosted by a german company at Germany and is forced to do this at the 1. January 2008.

IMHO: Because this isn't anonymizing service that doens't really matter as long as email content isn't being stored.

Btw. Does this really mean that all internet sites have to save access logs for 6 months? Or is there any different regulations regarding email?

There is mighty battle going about privacy in EU clearly. Some regulations require to store information and some regulations require to destroy information as soon as it is not required to be maintained.

Strange. It'll be nice to see where this path is leading in next ten years.

This means that every Internet Provider, Website and Phone Provider must save logged IP addresses and phone protocol communication for 6 months. The email content (header and body) will not be saved. Only the mail, web and firewall server log file will be saved for 6 months.
This law is applied for all german companies and organizations. There are no exceptions.

Yes, but giving that information out is also regulated.

As we chatted year a go or something.

So you are required to maintain logs but you're also required to keep it private. Just like banks has to do. Giving it out without proper legal procedures is also illegal.

This is way too funny:

This is going to be interesting. Others require privacy and others require to be able to monitor and log everything... Funny.
